CAUTION – The Pack Test Involves Risk

The Wildland Fire Lessons Learned Center (LLC) has a record of 5 Work Capacity Test related fatalities within the past 10 years.

We recently took a close look at reports involving the Work Capacity Test.

We should all properly prepare for our annual walk for work — whether it involves weight or not.

These incidents remind us that this annual endeavor may in fact be a walk in the park — but that does not mean it is free from danger.

  1. My organization in NZ requires a medical check from a GP before someone can proceed to the pack test. Is this the case for other agencies?

    • US federal employees have a basic yearly employment medical screening as a requirement to participate in the work capacity test. Non-federal US employees have hit and miss medical screening dependent on their agency.
